What to look for in a photo cleaner app for iPhone
Search the App Store for a photo cleaner and you'll find hundreds. They fall into a few types, and some are better at taking your money than cleaning your photos. Here's what to look for.
The three kinds of photo cleaner
Swipe apps
These show one photo at a time, and you swipe to keep or delete. They're the fastest way to make decisions about a big, messy library, because you only ever think about one photo. Sift is one of these.
Duplicate and similar-photo finders
These scan your library and group shots that look alike. They're good for exact copies. For “similar” photos, check the suggestions carefully: the app picks which one to keep, and it doesn't always pick the one you would.
All-in-one storage cleaners
These combine photos, contacts, videos and more. They're broad, but usually the most aggressive about subscriptions.
What to look for
- An undo, and a review step. You should see what's going before anything is deleted.
- On-device processing. Your photos shouldn't need to be uploaded to be sorted.
- Filters for the real clutter: screenshots, screen recordings, bursts and long videos.
- Works with iCloud Photos, without downloading your whole library up front.
- Honest pricing. Watch for weekly subscriptions and free trials that start the moment you open the app.
A note on weekly subscriptions
Plenty of cleaner apps charge every week. A few dollars a week adds up to well over a hundred a year, for something most people use a few times a month. Check the price on the App Store listing's In-App Purchases section before you tap anything.
For what it's worth, Sift is free for 20 decisions a day, and Sift Pro is a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase. No weekly plans.
▸ Sift
Sift shows your photos one at a time: swipe right to keep, left to bin. Nothing's deleted until you confirm, and it's free for 20 decisions a day.
